Sugar and Spice...
Since this is my first blog, I thought it needed to be something really cool.My four year old got her ears pierced!
For me this was a scary event and if you had asked me last year if I would let my four year old get her ears pierced, I would have said she was way too young, but… My four year old is very strong willed and loves to think for herself which are qualities I would love to cultivate without ending up in the loony bin from battle fatigue.
About four weeks ago we were at one of my sisters' houses and her daughter had some beautiful purple earrings that my daughter could not wear because they were for pierced ears. This got the gears in my little girl's head spinning. Without realizing it when I told her I was sorry but the earrings were only for pierced ears she started planning. By the time we got home from my sister’s house my daughter had made up her mind that she was getting her ears pierced at a place called Sweet N Sassy. Now she has never been to Sweet N Sassy and to my knowledge has never seen any advertisement for this store but she knew that was what they did. (Very bright child.) Not wanting to waste an opportunity to train my strong willed highly spirited daughter to be more respectful and less defiant I came up with a plan. I told her that I would take her to get her ears pierced if she could get seven smiley faces on a good behavior chart I whipped up. She was ready for the challenge. I explained the rules and I also explained how her ears would be pierced and that it would hurt right after she got them pierce. She was so excited that the only thing she talked about for the next four days was getting her ears pierced. Well it took her four weeks to get those seven smiley faces but she did it and for the most part her behavior has improved. When I told her that she could get her ears pierced she would have jumped out of her skin, if it were possible, because she was so excited. She told everyone she saw about her news. On the way to Sweet N Sassy she told me that when she was done she was going to jump out of the chair smile and laugh. I was skeptical. I really thought that she would back out once she got there. I was hoping that there would be another child there getting their ears pierce that she could watch but no such luck. She crawled up in that big chair put on her biggest bravest smile and waited. Again she was so excited she couldn’t stop bouncing. The technician put the dots on her ears we checked for placement and then two of the workers go ready to pierce. One...two...three...ears pierced and her she comes bouncing out of the chair to the first mirror she can find and not one tiny tear shed. I was in awe. My four year old was definitely braver than I was at her age and apparently had no feeling in her ear lobes. And then came the new that one of the technicians had hit too high and it had to be redone. Not a little too high way too high. The kind of too high where repiercing the same ear makes two holes not one giant hole. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I thought my daughter was so brave the first time how exactly am I going to tell my four year old that her wonderful new accessory had to be removed and redone. To say I was not happy would be a huge understatement but any mom out there knows exactly what crossed my mind and it was not pretty. I told my little tiny four year old the news and she looked at me with concern but then said “OK”. Now I think the world has to know what kind of amazing kid I have she is ok with getting this done again. She let me pull the earring out and let the technician repierced her ear right then. No tears, no complaining and again bouncing out of the chair to check out her new earrings.
